These containers were used by hogons (spiritual leader). In Dogon tradition, such cups were often carved for a hogon at the time of his installation as a priest or leader of a village. Sometimes his predecessor's bowl was used and ceremonially handed over to him. They often depict the hogon sitting on top of a horse or donkey.
